Dressmaking

I sometimes receive enquiries to create dresses for special occasions such as weddings, bridesmaids, flower girls, mothers of the bride\groom, and college ball dresses. It's important to understand that these requests are not taken lightly, and I don't accept these projects frequently due to the significant amount of time involved. Please continue reading to gain insight into the process and cost of bespoke and made-to-measure dresses.

The Process

  1. Consultation: The dressmaking process begins with an initial consultation where I discuss your vision, design preferences, and any specific details you have in mind. This is an opportunity for us to understand your style, event requirements, and personal preferences to create a garment that reflects your unique taste.

  2. Measurement-Taking: After the consultation, I proceed with taking accurate measurements. Measurements are crucial for achieving a precise and flattering fit. I take comprehensive measurements of your body, ensuring that the garment will be tailored to your specific size and proportions.

  3. Patternmaking: If we're not working directly from a commercial pattern, the next step is patternmaking. Using your measurements and design requirements as a guide, I create a custom pattern that will serve as the blueprint for your garment. Patternmaking involves drafting, manipulating, and adjusting the pattern pieces to ensure a precise fit and desired design elements.

  4. Mockup Creation: In most cases, I create a mockup (also known as a toile) before moving forward with the final fabric. The mockup is a trial version of the garment made from inexpensive fabric. It allows us to test the fit, make any necessary adjustments to the pattern, and ensure that we capture your desired style accurately. This step ensures that we achieve the perfect fit and make any necessary modifications before proceeding to the final fabric.

  5. Fabric Selection and Garment Construction: Once the pattern and fit are approved, we move on to selecting the appropriate fabrics, trims, and embellishments for your garment. I guide you through the fabric selection process, considering factors such as the desired look, comfort, and suitability for the occasion.

After the fabric is chosen, I begin the garment construction process. This involves cutting the fabric based on the pattern, assembling the pieces, and meticulously stitching them together. I pay attention to every detail, ensuring that the seams, finishes, and overall construction are of the highest quality.

  1. Fittings and Final Adjustments: Throughout the process, we schedule fittings to ensure the garment is fitting you perfectly. During these fittings, we make any necessary adjustments to the fit, hem length, and other details to ensure your complete satisfaction. This collaborative approach allows us to address any concerns and make the necessary refinements to achieve the desired outcome.

  2. Final Finishes and Delivery: Once all the adjustments are made, I complete the final finishes of the garment, such as adding closures, hemming, and any additional embellishments. I ensure that the garment is flawlessly finished and meets my high standards of craftsmanship. Finally, I arrange for the delivery or pickup of your finished garment, ready for you to wear and enjoy at your special event.
